Who runs UCHA?
UCHA is governed by and for its members, with every major decision determined by a Board of Directors (BOD) democratically elected by their peers each quarter. Any member, including yourself, can run for a board position, which covers your chore shift and part of your rent. Board officers who aren’t doing their jobs can be recalled through a membership petition.
At weekly board meetings, 7 elected officers (5 over the summer) get together to pass the UCHA budget, hire and evaluate the Executive Director, handle legally sensitive disputes, develop association-wide policy, oversee crew chiefs, hear member judicial appeals, make member expulsion decisions, and more. All board meetings are public, and referendums and town halls are held periodically to ensure transparency and active participation in shaping the Co-op for future generations. Any member of UCHA can propose a policy change or even petition to have a policy voted on by the entire membership.
The membership also votes to elect the officers of the UCHA Membership Committee (MemCom), the disciplinary and judicial body for UCHA. These 7 elected officers (5 over the summer) preside over matters related to rules enforcement, room/parking bump, member disputes, rent & choreshift deficiencies, organizing elections and referendums, room changes, grace quarters, and more. MemCom officers who aren’t doing their jobs can be recalled through a membership petition.
Who works at UCHA?
UCHA hires several full-time and part-time employees. The Board appoints a full-time Executive Director (ED) to oversee the day-to-day management of UCHA including the performance of employees and crew chiefs. The ED reports directly to the Board, and presents the annual budget to them for approval. The Board and ED also hire other employees such as an Accountant, several Kitchen culinary chefs, a Kitchen Manager, a Food Services Manager, and a crew of Facilities technicians. All UCHA employees (and hired independent contractors) report primarily to the Executive Director.
The Executive Director of UCHA appoints member Crew Chiefs to lead, coordinate, and oversee their respective crews. The supervision of crew chiefs falls under the purview of the Executive Director and the Board.
