A Cooperative is an organization where people come together with a common cause or idea and share their resources towards achieving them. Housing cooperatives apply this idea to housing, with the goal of creating affordability and fostering community.
UCHA is a student housing cooperative with the mission of making education more accessible by lowering students’ room & board expenses. We achieve this by being member-run and having our property owned by a nonprofit (UCHA). All of our needs, including meals, maintenance, and organization, are orchestrated by members alongside a team of full-time staff, which includes our Executive Director, in-house accountant, professional chefs, and a talented team of facilities technicians. Ultimately, the Co-op would not function without the efforts and initiative of hardworking members who each dedicate at least 4 hours per week to essential tasks like governance, cooking, cleaning, office management, social events, store management, mailroom management, and more. UCHA is a unique place, run not in the interests of profit but in the interests of the people who live here.
When you officially check-in, you become a member of the UCHA Co-op, and are part-owner and operator of the Association. We encourage you to get involved, as doing so will only enrich your experience and qualify of life while living here.
UCHA operates on the Rochdale principles of cooperation. These principles were founded in 1844 by a group of 28 textile workers in Rochdale, England who wanted more say over their daily affairs and as such set a base of principles that would govern their activities. These seven principles are:
Open and voluntary membership: membership shall not be denied on the basis of race, religion, national origin, or political opinion.
Democratic control: the system is run based on what appeals to the membership as a whole - one member, one vote.
Member economic participation/Non-profit: members have a say in how the money is spent/allocated. All profits are used for the benefit of the organization.
Autonomous, Independent and Non-political: the Co-op is not aligned with any political party or group.
Education, Training and information: the UCHA provides opportunities for the cooperative education of its members.
Cooperation among cooperatives: the UCHA whenever possible participates with other cooperative institutions and provides assistance as deemed appropriate.
Concern for the community: the UCHA engages in activity that is beneficial and helpful to the community.
